What is a resort?

We use the following definition for "resort":
A commercial enterprise that provides lodging for people on holiday travel.

The word "resort" is used as a general purpose label for any place included in the database. Depending on local language customs, this might include places called: resorts, lodges, hotels, motels, cottages, villas, chalets, camps, etc.

It must be a full-time commercial enterprise. This excludes, for example, people who occasionally rent rooms in their house to travelers, or vacation condos that are sometimes available for rent.

It must provide overnight lodging in a permanent, non-moveable, structure that is part of the resort. This excludes such things as certain theme parks, campgrounds, recreational vehicle parks, or any other place where permanent lodging facilities are not provided. It also
excludes houseboats, ferries, and cruise ships.

It must be focused primarily on providing lodging for people on holiday, as opposed to simply offering a place to stay overnight for general travelers. This excludes, for example, most chain hotels and motels in urban areas. An exception is made for certain "grand hotels" and "holiday hotels", which have extraordinary qualities of ambiance or
location that single them out as tourist lodging destinations.

Hotel Ratings

· A Hotel will normally have a minimum of 6 letting bedrooms, of which at least half must have ensuite or private bathroom facilities. A hotel will normally have a drinks license/licence (may be a restricted licence) and will serve breakfast and dinner.

· Star Ratings symbolize/symbolise the level of service, range of facilities and quality of guest care that you can expect.

· Hotels are required to meet progressively higher standards as they move up the scale from 1 to 5 Stars.

Guest House

· A Guest House is usually a commercial business and will normally have a minimum of 4 letting bedrooms, of which some will have ensuite or private facilities. Breakfasts will be available and evening meals may be provided.

· Guest houses in the London area tend to be small hotels. In common with most capital cities, London prices tend to be higher than prices outside the capital.

Bed and Breakfast

· Accommodation offering bed and breakfast, usually in a private house, and may or may not serve an evening meal.

· Bed and Breakfast accommodation may be provided within a traditional inn or pub environment. A restaurant and bar will usually be open to non-residents and may provide restaurant or bar food at lunchtime and in the evening.

· In a Restaurant with Rooms, the restaurant is the most significant part of the business. It is usually open to non-residents. Accommodation is available, and breakfast is usually provided.

Room Only

A Room Only Rate may apply to any Hotel, Guest House or Bed and Breakfast Accommodation included in the UK Holiday Accommodation Directory and must be discussed with the individual establishment.

Campus Accommodation

· Campus Accommodation is provided by Colleges and Universities for their students and is made available (sometimes with meals) for individuals, families or groups at certain times of the year. These typically include the main vacation period (Summer holiday period), as well as Easter and Christmas.

Lodge

· Primarily purpose-built overnight accommodation, often situated close to a major road or in a city centre/center. Reception hours may be restricted and payment may be required to check in. There may be associated restaurant facilities. A car parking space will normally be provided for each bedroom.

Self Catering

· Accommodation is usually rented by the week and will have cooking and other facilities to allow you to cater for yourselves.

What does en-suite mean?

· It means quite simply that the bedroom includes a private toilet and shower or bath. In smaller establishments, some (or all) rooms may offer a bathroom and toilet (restroom/lavatory) that is shared with other guests.
